The video channel ”Exploring Stamps” has been producing video material related to stamp collecting and philately on YouTube for a few years (link). The videos are easy to find with a Google search, the code has been #philately. The account can also be found on other social media channels: X (Twitter) and Instagram.
The author of the videos has been Graham Beck from the United States. He himself appears in the videos as a host and interviewer. In my opinion, the content is a treatment of topics and issues related to stamp collecting in a form that I personally believe will be of interest to a larger audience, especially beginner collectors. That is, stories related to the hobby. There are many videos of events, i.e. international stamp exhibitions, where buying and selling are essentially involved. The viewer jumps on board as if he were on the spot, even if there is no possibility to actually travel to the place. Another big topic has been different topical philately, such as country-specific stamps or stamps related to a certain topic. Examples of these are e.g. Åland stamps as well as rhinos related stamps, the latter due to Graham’s own interest.
The third enduring topic has been admiring and processing the paper feedback mail from the international audience. Now Graham has announced that he closed his mailbox at the end of last year 2023 and is presenting his last mails.
In social media Graham has previously said that he will be downsizing his publishing. Now in the latest video no. 50 “The Final Mail Day” (link) he says he will stop publishing Exploring Stamps entirely, except for a few videos still in progress. He does not leave reasons behind, e.g. citing ”personal reasons”, but says honestly, that he hasn’t made the channel ”sustainable”, i.e. continuous/viable(?) enough. Although I think he has a pretty good group of followers and subscribers and the number of viewers for his videos (at least several thousand each), they are not enough numbers for his expectations. Likewise, channel maintenance is a significant financial commitment. He has looked into getting sponsors, but the number of subscribers and followers is probably not enough for this. He states that he has kept fan merchandise products and I’m not quite sure, but whether he would have also received financial sponsorship from APS (American Philatelic Society). Producing videos and maintaining the channel is therefore a full-time job, on top of his actual (related to the profession) full-time job, the content of which I do not know. He also states that he considered making the content simpler, but doesn’t think it’s a good thing, and probably neither would do his followers.
That’s not to say Graham won’t continue stamp collecting hobby, and he mentions being selected as one of the USPS’s “Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC),” a ten-member committee that reviews new USPS stamp designs. Co. any US citizen can give feedback on new topics to the committee. CSAC was founded in 1957.
I can well understand the decision and things like this can also be involved that you don’t want to bring up publicly. Even if the work would be nice and enjoyable, e.g. receiving viewer feedback, it cannot be continued indefinitely without sufficient ”reward”, i.e. compensation.
The reason I bring this topic up in this portal is that I think ”Exploring Stamps” has been quite a significant, if not the most significant effort to raise the popularity of stamp collecting and philately. In those landscapes, where the much-desired young people are.
Someone might wonder if someone else, some other party, would have succeeded better? Or should you have just endured or tried harder? In principle, everything is possible, but in practice, at least to me it is obvious, that stamp collecting and philately are no longer such a thing that this kind of media production would be a successful audience genre, even in large English-speaking countries. Not to mention that some big media company would buy the rights to the format. Leisure culture is so fragmented. As well as the uncertain future of paper letters and paper postage stamps in general. Most likely, the content will be drowned out by other offerings that attract masses of viewers and are easier to absorb. I have discussed about this separately (link).
Graham does not even discuss the so-called classic or in-depth investigative philately topics, such as postal history comprehensively. Or, for example, differences in perforations, watermarks or paper quality between stamps. The ones that are presented and competed in exhibitions. This is understandable to me, because the group of enthusiasts interested in these is small, elderly and hardly even follows YouTube’s offerings. Not to mention the familiarity required.
Of course, one practical thing is the language barrier: you can of course have English subtitles on YouTube, but not yet simultaneous interpretation for other languages, such as Finnish. This in itself may change in a few years, with artificial intelligence. For example, for this English translation of the original blog text in Finnish, I have used Google Translator. The most serious mistake by GT to be manually corrected seems to be to translate ”postmarking” instead of ”stamp collecting”.
In the future, I don’t think the situation will improve much, but rather the opposite, as I stated in connection with the evaluation of the possibilities of the StampEX digital magazine (link). Boomers’ paper magazine in pdf format, not suitable for smartphone use.
Of course, it may be that there will be another or more stamp collectors to replace Graham Beck as YouTuber. The cold fact about me is, that when the use of paper stamps stops at some point, the number of people interested in collecting them will start to wane once and for all. In Finland, we are perhaps among the first. In countries with a rising middle class, such as China and India, stamp collecting and thus communicating about it will survive the longest.
But, as Graham states, the published Exploring Stamps videos will remain for viewing, so I recommend that those who are even a little interested in stamps, who can read and understand English, familiarize themselves with the channel at this point at the latest.

Exploring Stamps lopettaa – tilaa uudelle tubettajalle?
Videokanava Exploring Stamps on tuottanut postimerkkeilyyn ja filateliaan liittyvää videomateriaalia YouTubeen (linkki) muutaman vuoden ajan. Videot on helppo löytää Googlen haulla, tunnus on ollut #philately. Tili löytyy myös muissa sosiaalisen median kanavissa: X:ssä (Twitter) ja Instagramissa.
Videoiden tekijä on ollut yhdysvaltalainen Graham Beck. Hän itse esiintyy videoissa juontajana ja haastattelijana. Sisältö on minusta postimerkkeilyyn liittyvien aiheiden ja asioiden käsittelyä siinä muodossa, jonka itse uskon kiinnostavan suurempaa yleisöä, erityisesti aloittelevia keräilijöitä. Eli harrastukseen liittyvät tarinat. Paljon on videoita tapahtumista eli kansainvälisistä postimerkkinäyttelyistä, joissa osto ja myynti on olennaisesti mukana. Katsoja hyppää kyytiin kuin paikan päälle, vaikkei käytännössä mahdollisuuksia matkustaa paikalle olisi. Toinen iso aihe ovat olleet erilainen aihefilatelia, kuten maakohtaisten merkkien tai tiettyyn aiheeseen liittyvät merkit. Esimerkkejä näistä ovat mm. Ahvenanmaan postimerkit sekä sarvikuonoihin liittyvät merkit, jälkimmäinen Grahamin itsensä mielenkiinnon vuoksi.
Kolmas kestoaihe on ollut kansainväliseltä katselijakunnalta tulleen paperisen palautepostin ihastelu ja käsittely. Nyt Graham on ilmoittanut sulkeneensa postilaatikkonsa viime vuoden 2023 lopussa ja esitteleekin viimeisiä postejaan.
Somessa Graham on kertonut aiemmin vähentävänsä julkaisutuotantoa. Nyt uusimmassa videossa nr. 50 ”The Final Mail Day” (linkki) hän sanoo lopettavansa kokonaan Exploring Stamps-julkaisemisen, muutamaa vielä tekeillä olevaa videota lukuunottamatta. Perusteluja hän ei jätä kertomatta esim. ”henkilökohtaisiin syihin” vedoten, vaan sanoo rehellisesti, ettei ole saanut kanavaa ”sustainable” eli tarpeeksi kestäväksi tai elinkelpoiseksi(?), käsittääkseni omiin odotuksiinsa nähden. Vaikka hänellä on minusta ihan hyvä seuraaja- ja tilaajajoukko ja katselijamäärät videoilleen (jokaisella vähintään useita tuhansia), niin ne eivät hänen odotuksiinsa ole riittäviä lukemia. Samoin kanavan ylläpito on merkittävä taloudellinen sitoumus. Hän on selvitellyt sponsoroijien hankkimista, mutta tähän tilaajien ja seuraajien lukumäärät eivät kai riitä. Hän toteaa pitäneensä yllä fanituotekauppaa ja en ole ihan varma, mutta olisiko hän saanut myös rahallista sponsorointia myös APS:ltä (American Philatelic Society). Videoiden tuottaminen ja kanavan ylläpito on siis kokopäivätyötä, hänen varsinaisen (ammattiin liittyvän) kokopäivätyönsä päälle, jonka sisältöä en itse tiedä. Hän myös toteaa harkinneensa tekevänsä sisältöä yksinkertaisemmin, mutta ei pidä sitä hyvänä asiana, kuten ei todennäköisesti seuraajatkaan.
Tämä ei tarkoita, etteikö Graham jatkaisi postimerkkeilyn parissa ja hän mainitsee tulleensa valituksi yhtenä USPS:n ”Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC)” kymmenjäsenisen komitean jäseneksi, joka arvioi Yhdysvaltain postilaitoksen uusia postimerkkiaiheita. Ko. komitealle saa antaa palautetta uusista aiheista kuka tahansa yhdysvaltain kansalainen. CSAC on perustettu 1957.
Voin hyvin ymmärtää päätöksen ja tällaisessa voi olla mukana myös asioita, joita ei julkisesti halua tuoda esiin. Vaikka työ olisi mukavaa ja nautinnollista esim. saada katsojapalautetta, sitä ei ilman riittävää “palkkiota” ts. kompensaatiota voi jatkaa loputtomiin.
Miksi otan tämän asian esiin tässä alustassa, on se, että minusta Exploring Stamps varsin merkittävä, jos ei merkittävin ponnistus nostaa postimerkkeilyn ja filateliankin suosiota. Niissä kanavissa, missä paljon kaivatut nuoret ovat.
Joku saattaa pohtia, että olisiko joku toinen, jokin toinen taho onnistunut paremmin? Tai olisiko pitänyt vain jaksaa tai yrittää enemmän? Periaatteessa kaikki on mahdollista, mutta käytännössä, ainakin minulle on ilmeistä, että postimerkkeily ja filatelia ei isoissa englanninkielisissä maissakaan ole enää sellainen asia, että tällainen mediatuotanto olisi menestyksekäs yleisölaji. Saatikka, että joku iso mediayhtiö ostaisi oikeudet formaattiin. Vapaa-ajan kulttuuri on niin pirstoutunut. Samoin kuin paperisen kirjeen ja postimerkin epävarma tulevaisuus ylipäätään. Todennäköisesti sisältö hukkuu muuhun, katsojamassoja vetävään, helpommin omaksuttavaan tarjontaan. Olen tätä pohtinut erikseen (linkki).
Graham ei edes käsittele ns. klassisen tai syvällisen tutkinnallisen filatelian aiheita, kuten postihistoriaa kattavasti. Tai esimerkiksl postimerkkierien hammaste-, vesileima- tai paperieroja. Niitä joita esitellään ja joilla kilpaillaan näyttelyissä. Tämä on minusta ymmärrettävää, sillä näistä kiinnostunut harrastajakunta on pieni, iäkäs ja tuskin edes seuraa YouTuben tarjontaa. Puhumattakaan asian edellyttämästä perehtymisestä.
Toki yksi käytännön asia on kielimuuri: YouTubessa saa toki englanninkielisen tekstityksen, mutta ei vielä simultaanitulkkausta muille kielille, kuten suomeksi. Tämä sinänsä voi muuttua muutamassa vuodessa, tekoälyn myötä. Esimerkiksi tähän englanninkieliseen suomenkieliseen alkuperäistekstin käännökseen olen käyttänyt Google kääntäjää. Merkittävin GT:n tekemä, manuaalisesti korjattava virhe näyttää olevan ”postimerkkeilyn” kääntäminen ”postmarking”, ”stamp collecting” sijaan.
Tulevaisuutta kohden en usko tilanteen paljoa paranevan, vaan pikemminkin päinvastoin, kuten totesin StampEX-digilehdenkin mahdollisuuksien arvioinnin yhteydessä (linkki). Boomereiden paperilehti pdf-formaatissa, ei sopiva käyttöön älypuhelimessa.
Voi toki olla, että tulee toinen tai useampia postimerkkeilystä tubettavia Graham Beckin tilalle. Kylmä tosiasia minusta on, että kun paperisen postimerkin käyttö loppuu jossain vaiheessa, sen keräilystä kiinnostuneiden joukko lähtee lopullisesti hiipumaan. Meillä Suomessa ehkä ensimmäisten joukossa. Nousevan keskiluokan maissa, kuten Kiinassa Intiassa, postimerkkeily ja siis siitä viestittäminen, pysyy elossa pisimpään.
Mutta, kuten Graham toteaa, julkaistut Exploring Stamps-videot jäävät katseltavaksi, joten suosittelen vähänkin postimerkkeilystä kiinnostuneiden, englantia taitavien, tutustuvan niihin viimeistään tässä vaiheessa.
